Our servers - powered by 100% renewable electricity
As a leading e-mail provider with the GMX and WEB.DE brands, we are aware of our responsibility to the environment and society. We therefore operate our servers and data centres in Germany using 100 % renewable electricity.
Although the amount of data in our data centres has almost tripled in recent years, we have been able to reduce the number of servers. This is made possible by our own cloud solution, based on Kubernetes, which enables us to utilise computing capacities dynamically and in a resource-efficient manner.

At the end of March 2026, United Internet AG’s sustainability statement (“Nonfinancial Group statement”) was published for the first time as part of the annual report—a sign of the importance that environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors have come to hold within companies.
Do more, use less
We also want to act sustainably in our offices. What do we do to achieve this?
We use energy-saving devices that switch off automatically when not in use, and rely on LED lighting in our offices. The use of refurbished company smartphones also conserves important natural resources.
We also consider environmental aspects when choosing beverages. Anyone who wants to can get their coffee from us with oat milk. As part of our New Work project, we are replacing beverage deliveries with water dispensers. This helps us reduce transport and packaging.
Reduce, reuse, recycle
We want our IT devices to stay in use for as long as possible. After that, we hand our laptops and smartphones over to external refurbishment partners.
In 2025, a total of 195,5 tons of hardware was sold or donated via the providers AfB and Green IT Solution. This enabled us to save 1,497 tons of CO2 at the service provider AfB alone.

United with UNICEF:
Through regular fundraising appeals to our customers at WEB.DE, GMX, 1&1, and IONOS, as well as additional donations from the United Internet Group, we have raised approximately €78 million for UNICEF programs worldwide to date. In 2025, the “United Internet for UNICEF” Foundation donated approximately €4.08 million to UNICEF.
Sustainability Award Media Bavaria:
The editorial offerings of our WEB.DE and GMX portals won the first sustainability award in the Bavarian media sector for their transparency.
